Living below the poverty line
Mon 16/10/06 - A study by the Universities of Antwerp and Lige shows that on average 1 in 3 people of Turkish or Moroccan descent in Belgium are living in poverty.

38.7% of Turkish immigrants and 25% of people with a Moroccan background have to make ends meet with less than 500 euros each month.

Compared to European poverty standards, the findings are even more staggering.

If we take into account the European poverty line which is drawn at a monthly income of 777 euros per month, almost 60% of people of Turkish descent and 55% of people of Moroccan descent would be living in poverty.

Where Italian immigrants are concerned, more than 20% are living in poverty.

The figure is 10.16% for native Belgians.

The statistics mean that members of the ethnic minorities have a bigger chance of ending up in poverty.

This can be explained by the fact that they often lack the right language skills to find a job.

Especially young members of the ethnic minorities in Belgium find their situation very frustrating.

Als dit onderzoek juist is dan ziet dat er niet goed uit want we weten tot wat armoede leidt of lijdt.
